No, this Montana is not in the USA but closer home in Switzerland.

Perched high above the Rhone Valley in the western part of the country, this is actually the two neighbouring resorts of Crans and Montana. The twin towns have much to offer, including an impressive view of the chain of mountain peaks from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc and a particularly wide programme of activities all year round.

Idyllic mountain village or alpine town? Crans-Montana combines both with all the comforts of a modern holiday resort and an expansive natural landscape and panoramic views of the Valais Alps.

The shopping is fabulous with more than 250 boutiques. And, you are spoilt for eating choices with 60 restaurants dotted across the twin resorts.

In summer you can go canyoning, mountain climbing, water skiing and paragliding. Or, get a round of golf in the shadow of the Alps.

Winter, of course, means skiing on the 140 km of downhill slopes with a mix of easy and challenging runs.

But, most important of all, you won’t run into the milling crowds that seem to be all over the usual haunts in Switzerland. Keep your eyes peeled, though. You could run into Sir Roger Moore or even Sophia Loren – they are sometime residents in Crans-Montana as is French chef and restaurateur Michel Roux
